Bacho Kiro Cave serves as a roost for a total of 4 bat species living in the cave in different seasons of the year: the greater, lesser and Mediterranean horseshoe bats and the Naterrer’s Bat.
Bacho Kiro Cave is an important winter roost for more than 200 bats from at least 4 species:
- Greater horseshoe bat – Rhinolophus ferrumequinum
- Lesser horseshoe bat – Rhinolophus hipposideros
- Mediterranean horseshoe bat – Rhinolophus euryale
- Naterrer’s bat – Myotis nattereri
Bulgaria boasts 33 out of the 35 bat species which can be found in Europe. All bats in Bulgaria are under the protection of the national Biodiversity Act and the Mediterranean horseshoe bat is also included in the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The greater and lesser horseshoe bats have a priority conservation status for all Europe.
