Welcome to one of the bat roosts of international importance for the conservation of the European populations of bats! A colony of more than 35 000 individuals from the species Schreibers’ bent-winged bat and long-fingered bat spends the winter here. Both species are included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The other two species found in the cave are the greater and lesser horseshoe bats; they have a priority conservation status in all Europe.
Dyavolskoto Garlo Cave is considered one of the most important roosts for bats in Bulgaria! In different seasons of the year a total of 4 species of bats live in the cave:
- Greater horseshoe bat – Rhinolophus ferrumequinum
- Lesser horseshoe bat – Rhinolophus hipposideros
- Long-fingered bat – Myotis cappaccinii
- Schreiber’s bent-winged bat – Miniopterus schreibersii
Bulgaria boasts 33 out of the 35 bat species which can be found in Europe. All bats in Bulgaria are under the protection of the national Biodiversity Act.
